At the end of the match against Benevento Calcio, Coach Alessandro Diamanti headed to the mixed zone at the “Ciro Vigorito” Stadium to comment on the match against the Giallorossi.
“Before the opening goal, we were playing very well; we had control of the game. However, as we tell ourselves during the week, having control isn’t enough because there are other things we need to do, like defensive work. We all need to stay focused, because losing the ball happens, but we can’t leave ourselves exposed the way our opponents caught us. In my opinion, it was a game that — with a few more favorable moments in the second half — we could have turned around, and I was very optimistic. Even though that didn’t happen, we’re heading home with a lot of clarity: it’s clear there’s a lot of work to be done, and we know it. The players, like everyone else, are disappointed with this result, especially toward the fans, who turned out in large numbers again today, and we’re grateful for that. We would have loved to give them something to celebrate, but the players battled, fought hard, and tried to dictate the game.”
“How much of an impact did the disallowed goal and the shot off the post have? Mentally, we need to improve in these areas, and we need to do it quickly. We’re a young team, but we need to grow quickly because there are positive moments we need to capitalize on — like that goal or the shot off the post — which could have changed the game. We have to stay in the game until the 95th minute, and we need to be more incisive in seeking the equalizer, even if it means taking a few risks, as we tried to do.”
“We’re aware that we have to work hard, and we work well together. We need to improve — even by doing the things we already do well even better. Ours is a process, and as such, it must follow certain steps that you can’t skip. A very important match awaits us next Sunday, and we’re very happy to be back playing in front of our fans.”
